Known as the City of Gold, Johannesburg is a place of energy, ambition, culture, creativity and striking contrasts. ‘Joburg City’ looks beyond the familiar image of the city and celebrates the people who give it its spirit. For Khazimula, the real gold is human.
The song embraces Johannesburg as it is. It celebrates its movement, diversity, humour, resilience and possibility, while acknowledging that different realities exist side by side. From Soweto to Sandton, the song captures the sense of a city where many worlds meet, and where people continue to build, dream, work, create and connect.
At the centre of the song is the Khazimula philosophy of ‘Let Your Colours Shine’ and ‘We Are the Treasure’. Carol-Ann’s work is built around the belief that every person carries something unique and valuable, and that recognising that value in ourselves and in others can create greater connection and possibility.
‘Joburg City’ also gives a musical expression to ‘Love It Together’, the wider movement created by Carol-Ann around connection, inclusion and celebrating life together. The song is intended as more than a release. It is an invitation for people to recognise one another, share their own experience of Johannesburg and take part in a more positive conversation about the city.
That invitation is summed up in the phrase ‘Joburg City Loves You’. It shifts the focus from simply singing about Johannesburg to giving its people a voice within the story. The wider ‘Love It Together’ vision is for the song to become a starting point for participation, stories and connections that can continue well beyond release day.
There is a strong South African spirit running through the song. Its message of love and understanding comes from a belief in the value of difference as well as the things we share. That reflects the cultural landscape that has shaped Carol-Ann’s own storytelling, including the many languages, communities, rhythms and experiences that meet in Johannesburg.
‘Joburg City’ also continues the musical journey established through the recent Khazimula releases. ‘On a Dream’ explored hope, imagination and possibility. ‘Celebrate Life’ focused on gratitude, human dignity and the value of being alive. With ‘Joburg City’, those ideas become rooted in a place that is deeply personal to Carol-Ann and central to her own story.

Carol-Ann grew up in Johannesburg, and the city has influenced the way she sees people, stories and the world around her. Her creative process is rooted in observation and discovery, finding meaning in everyday moments and allowing those details to become songs and stories. ‘Joburg City’ turns that instinct towards the city itself and the people who make it what it is.
The recording brings together Carol-Ann Meltzer as songwriter and composer, vocalist Megan Marks, and producer Mark Beling, continuing the creative spirit behind the recent Khazimula releases.
Ultimately, ‘Joburg City’ is not asking Johannesburg to be perfect. It is asking people to see what is already here. The energy. The colour. The diversity. The resilience. The people. It is a song about a city, but at its heart it is about human connection and belonging. A love letter to Johannesburg, from someone who knows its complexity and still chooses to celebrate its possibility.

Biography – Khazimula (Carol-Ann Meltzer)
Carol-Ann Meltzer is a South African songwriter, storyteller, and the creator of Khazimula, a musical, literary, and social upliftment journey centred on meaning, light, creativity, and human connection. Through music, poetry, reflection, storytelling, playlists, publishing, and future social impact initiatives, she creates work that encourages discovery, connection, and personal growth.
The name Khazimula, derived from the isiZulu word meaning “to shine” or “to radiate light,” was born during a visit to the SAMRO offices while Carol-Ann was searching for a stage name. The word immediately resonated with her vision of hope, possibility, colour, and the belief that every person has their own unique light to share.
Music has been part of Carol-Ann’s life since childhood. She participated in school productions, attended the Performing Arts Workshop in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, and spent years collecting melodies, lyrics, and ideas on a small dictaphone. Those recordings eventually formed the foundation of Love It Together, a collection of twenty-four original songs developed with arranger and producer Bryan Schimmel. She also completed coursework in Lyric Writing with the Berklee College of Music.
A pivotal chapter began when longtime friend Neil Solomon introduced her to producer and musician Mark Beling of Mean Mr Mustard. Along the way, she also collaborated with songwriter and vocal coach Anne Steyn, who co-wrote ‘Tomorrow’ and created the first arrangement of ‘On a Dream’. Vocalist Megan Marks later joined the project, bringing Carol-Ann’s songs to life with warmth, depth, and emotional honesty.
Today, Khazimula is releasing original recordings produced by Mark Beling, while continuing to expand into storytelling, publishing, curated playlists, and social upliftment initiatives. At the heart of the project is a simple invitation that guides Carol-Ann’s work: Let Your Colours Shine!
