South African singer-songwriter Celeste Swift releases ‘What If You Had Stayed?‘ on Friday, 2 October 2026, accompanied by an official music video. As her most intimate song to date, it draws on her own experience of pregnancy loss and asks a deeply human question: who might that little person have become, and what might life have looked like if the pregnancy had continued?
For Celeste, the song grew from more than the experience of loss itself. It came from having imagined a future, begun to picture a child and entered into the emotional experience of becoming a mother, only to have that future disappear. ‘What If You Had Stayed?’ reflects on the person she never had the opportunity to know and the ordinary moments that would never happen, from hearing a voice and celebrating birthdays to watching a child grow into themselves.
At the centre of the song is the understanding that a loss can be profound even when the person being mourned was never known outside the imagination. Celeste describes the song as coming from “the place where the questions still live”, rather than from having found all the answers. That honesty gives the song its emotional character and speaks to an experience that can be difficult to articulate: someone can be deeply loved, deeply missed and remain a significant part of a person’s story without ever having had the chance to enter the world.
The song also considers the silence that can surround pregnancy loss. While one person’s world may have changed completely, life around them can continue as though nothing has happened. The experience can be physically and emotionally overwhelming while remaining invisible to others, and there may be uncertainty about what to say or how to explain what has happened. Celeste wanted to make space for those feelings without placing a timetable on grief or suggesting that there is a prescribed way to mourn.
Her hope is that the song may reach another woman who has experienced a similar loss and allow her to recognise something of her own story in it. As Celeste puts it, “If she hears this song and thinks, ‘Someone understands’, then this song has done what I needed it to do.”
‘What If You Had Stayed?’ continues Celeste’s creative work with South African musician and producer Mark Beling of Mean Mr Mustard. Recorded at Little Rock Recording Studio, Beling produced and mixed the track, with mastering by Darryl De Lange. For Celeste, the production needed to support the story without overwhelming it. She describes the recording as being less about making every moment sound flawless and more about capturing something honest. “The vulnerability in the vocal needed to remain because this is not a story I wanted to sing from a distance; it is one I have lived.”
The release follows Celeste’s debut single, ‘Now That You’re Gone’, released in August 2025 and written in memory of her late father, and ‘Spookasem Woorde’, her first Afrikaans-language single, released in October 2025. Together, the songs reflect an artist whose songwriting is increasingly rooted in lived experience, while moving between English and Afrikaans and exploring themes of loss, love, healing and emotional resilience.
Celeste’s musical journey began in 2009 with live performances at weddings, bars and intimate venues. After stepping away from music, she returned in 2023 as lead vocalist of alternative pop-rock band Headline, before founding Swift & Co. and beginning her solo career in 2024. Her approach to songwriting is grounded in melody, honest storytelling and the belief that music can articulate experiences that are sometimes difficult to express in ordinary conversation.
With ‘What If You Had Stayed?’, Celeste Swift turns a deeply personal experience into a song that reaches beyond her own story. It is about the love that begins with imagining a life, the absence left when that future cannot unfold, and the questions that can remain long after the moment itself has passed.

Biography
Celeste Swift is a South African singer-songwriter whose music is grounded in honest storytelling, emotional depth and the quiet resilience that comes from lived experience. Drawing from adult contemporary and singer-songwriter influences, she creates intimate, melodic songs that explore loss, love, healing and the questions that remain long after life changes.
Her musical journey began in 2009, performing cover songs at weddings, bars and intimate live music venues. Those early years established her as a confident and engaging live performer, while teaching her the importance of creating a genuine connection with an audience. After taking time away from music, Celeste returned to the stage in 2023 as lead vocalist of alternative pop-rock band Headline. The experience reignited her passion for songwriting and reaffirmed music as the creative path she wanted to pursue.
In 2024, Celeste founded Swift & Co. and began her solo career, taking greater creative ownership of her music and turning personal experiences into original songs. Her debut single, ‘Now That You’re Gone’, was released on 1 August 2025 and produced by South African musician and producer Mark Beling. Written in memory of her late father, the song explores grief, healing and emotional wellbeing, transforming a deeply personal experience into something intended to offer understanding and connection to others who have experienced loss.
Celeste followed her debut with ‘Spookasem Woorde’, released on 31 October 2025. Her first Afrikaans-language release, the song broadened her musical expression while retaining the personal and emotionally driven songwriting that has become central to her work.
On 2 October 2026, Celeste releases ‘What If You Had Stayed?’, an English-language single recorded and produced with Mark Beling. One of her most vulnerable songs to date, it draws on her own experience of pregnancy loss and gives voice to the private grief, unanswered questions and imagined future that can accompany it. Written from a place where the questions have not necessarily found answers, ‘What If You Had Stayed?’ reflects on the experience of grieving someone who was deeply loved without ever having the opportunity to know them. The song considers the physical and emotional reality of pregnancy loss, the loneliness of carrying a grief that may be invisible to others, and the lasting sense of wondering who that child might have become. For Celeste, the recording process was about preserving that vulnerability rather than concealing it. Working again with Mark Beling, she found a producer who understood the importance of allowing the story and vocal performance to remain at the centre of the production. Together, they created a sound that supports the emotion of the song without overwhelming it.
Across her growing catalogue, Celeste Swift continues to explore the space between heartbreak and hope. Her songs are personal in origin but universal in feeling, shaped by a belief that music can give language to experiences that are often difficult to express. Whether performing live or recording in the studio, she approaches her work with sincerity, emotional openness and a desire to make listeners feel less alone.
