Die Papier Praat, a new weekly Afrikaans-language news programme on YouTube, has joined the Die Papier family. New episodes will premiere every Thursday at 19:00, offering viewers an engaging blend of news, sports and analysis.
Alongside a preview of highlights from the following day’s edition of Die Papier, audiences can expect insightful discussions on local and international developments, as well as in-depth coverage of issues shaping South Africa and the world.
Sports fans will also be well served, with a dedicated segment featuring the week’s biggest sporting stories and a look ahead at the weekend’s sporting calendar, complementing Die Papier’s popular sports pages.
The programme is hosted by Daniëlla van Heerden, an award-winning journalist and former newsreader on kykNET’s eNuus. Van Heerden began her journalism career as editor of the student newspaper Wapad at North-West University in Potchefstroom. She subsequently worked for Beeld before joining eNuus and eNCA as an Afrikaans and English field reporter and television news presenter. Over a distinguished career spanning more than a decade in broadcast journalism, she has earned accolades from the National Press Club and the ATKV Media Veertjies, as well as the Koker Award for her contribution to Afrikaans. She holds cum laude degrees in Communication Studies and Journalism from North-West University and is widely respected for her fearless, community-focused reporting.
Joining her is Jana Swart, a popular sports presenter, influencer and passionate advocate for the power of sport. Inspired by the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Swart earned a BSc in Sport Science followed by an honours degree in High-Performance Sport. Her career with Stellenbosch FC began through community football initiatives before progressing through the club’s media ranks to become Media Officer for the senior team. In addition to her work in sports media, she is also involved in modelling and is committed to using media to amplify athletes’ stories and deepen fans’ connection to sport.
Barnard Beukman, editor of Die Papier, says he is thrilled about the “exciting and necessary expansion” of the growing ecosystem of this weekly newspaper’s brand.
“We have said from the beginning that the printed newspaper is an important foundation for the brand, but is only one element of it. More elements are on their way, and our website is also on the verge of major developments.”
Beukman says it is a great honour for him and his team to have Daniëlla and Jana on board for Die Papier Praat. “I believe they will help to change Afrikaans news broadcasting irrevocably and in an exciting way.”
Jeannine van Zyl, Head of Premium Products and Content at Novus Media, Die Papier’s parent company, is equally enthusiastic about the launch.
“With Die Papier Praat we want to further expand Die Papier’s platform to reach our readers in a modern, accessible and personal way,” she says. “The broadcast gives us the opportunity to tell the stories behind the headlines in greater depth.”
