JOBURG BALLET – 2023 Seasons announced

Joburg Ballet is pleased to announce a bumper line-up for 2023, including three full-length ballets and a season of short works.

The ballet year opens at the Joburg Theatre on Tuesday 14 March with a triple bill of ballets new to the company’s mainstream repertoire. Following the success of her Table for Two for Joburg Ballet’s RAW programme for new choreographers in 2021, Joburg Ballet dancer Chloé Blair has been invited to expand the piece for the first season of 2023.

Roseline Keppler of Vuyani Dance Theatre will create a new work – her first for Joburg Ballet – entitled Identity while in a first for South Africa, company dancer Bruno Miranda will stage the Grand Pas from the 1896 ballet, Bluebeard. It provides a glittering showcase for dancing in ballet’s grandest tradition.

Following the triple bill at the Joburg Theatre from Tuesday 27 June will be the return to the stage for the first time in seven years of Joburg Ballet’s admired production of the full-length Romeo and Juliet. Dancers from Vuyani Dance Theatre will join forces with Joburg Ballet for the season, giving the crowd scenes the numbers needed to make an appropriately powerful impact in this immortal Shakespearean love story.

In July, Joburg Ballet will visit Cape Town to perform SA choreographer Veronica Paeper’s La Traviata-The Ballet at the Baxter Theatre from Wednesday 26 July to Sunday 29 July. Joburg Ballet presented an acclaimed season of the ballet in Johannesburg earlier this year and the visit to the Baxter Theatre will allow Cape Town audiences to see the full Joburg Ballet company for the first time.

Joburg Ballet’s fourth season for 2023 will feature the full-length Don Quixote at the Joburg Theatre from Friday 29 October. In presenting Joburg Ballet’s sizzling production of this comedy ballet classic next year, the company will be bringing back to the stage the ballet that had to be cancelled after just four performances in 2020 due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
