JAN BLOUKAAS RELEASES NEW SINGLE WHILE BATTLING CANCER

Jan Bloukaas has never been afraid of thinking outside the box, taking on new challenges or working hard to achieve his goals.

Therefore, it comes as no surprize that he is adamant to remain positive and inspire fans with new music during his battle with brain cancer.

His latest single, SWEEF, has just been release and this catchy pop song, from his own pen and studio that was written before lockdown is about relationships.

“The song showcases the new direction in which my music is heading, and the feedback has been very positive so far,” he says. “It is very personal and the best lyrics I have written so far, and I think fans will be able to relate.”

SWEEF is the first song to be released from his upcoming album, Vreemdeling, which will be available early 2023.

According to the singer-songwriter his life has changed dramatically during the three years it took to complete the album. Not only because of the pandemic, but also because of a serious accident he was involved in and his current diagnosis.

The album was inspired by the dark side of the human mind, and the title specifically choses because he has been feeling like a stranger in his own body over the past few years.

“It is an honest summary of how I feel on a daily basis. I hope that my music will speak to those who are going through difficult times,” he shares. “This album announces a new phase in my music career. The music is close to my heart, and it is my most honest work up to date.”

Jan Bloukaas, a.k.a. Jean du Plessis, barely finished school in 2017 when he shot to fame with the song Kaas Elke Dag and landed a deal with Universal Music.

Since then he has had a very successful career, boasting several radio- and dance hits (including kykNET en Chill, Boerseun and Desember), two popular albums (Desember and The Party Starter), a record deal with Inhoud Huis Musiek and numerous awards.

The Capetonian also collaborated with Biggy and Early B on the song Dans and released a duet, Sterre Brand, with Janie Bay. Additionally, he has also shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry and performed at several major music festivals and concerts.

He shares that his music is a true reflection of his life. “My music is a combination of everything I listen to, and I have a diverse taste in music.” He would also like to collaborate with the likes of Spoegwolf and Melktertkommissie’s Lucinda in the future.

He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is determined to remain positive. “I developed double vision and was sent for an MRI by an ophthalmologist, and they discovered that I had a tumour. Initially I was very shocked and upset about the diagnosis,” he says. “I am doing well at the moment and am concentrating on the treatment rather than the prognosis. My faith keeps me going and I want to use my illness as a testimony of God’s awesomeness.”

With SWEEF Bloukaas not only shows how much he has grown as a musician, but also why he deserves his place in the Afrikaans music industry.
