And that is exactly what FRANCOIS VAN COKE and ZAAN SONNEKUS did in the music video for their new collab titled “LEWE”.
The energy of these two SA rock greats and the song is palpable in the music video. “LEWE” is their second collaboration since “Almal Baklei” in 2023.
Francois about Zaan and “LEWE”:
“Zaan and I are friends, but I also see something of myself in him when I was his age. It is that putting your body on the line, no holds barred commitment to making music. I think this song captures this attitude.”
For Zaan, it is full-circle to make music with Francois:
“To make music with someone who inspired me to do it in the first place, is something I don’t take lightly. Francois has been my favourite artist since I was a young laaitie and will probably be for the rest of my life. I grew up with his music and saw how he kicked the door open for Afrikaans rock. So, to call him a friend and a mentor is kind of surreal for me.”

This day-in-the-life music video vibrates with life. Amongst other things, Francois and Zaan learned how to paint braaibroodjies from Spoegwolf’s frontman, Danie du Toit:

Zaan’s experience of this shoot: “The video is basically a few days of doing things we’ve probably always wanted to do – we went surfing, tattooed each other, raced go-karts, jammed with residents at a nursery home and a bunch of other things you don’t do every day. It felt less like a music video and more like two friends making memories while the cameras are rolling.”
