There is something powerful about the moment you stop questioning yourself and begin trusting your own voice. For young South African singer-songwriter Sasha Burn, that journey sits at the heart of her new single, Mirror.
Known for heartfelt storytelling, memorable melodies and a sound that blends folk warmth, pop accessibility and a distinctly South African spirit, Sasha has steadily been carving out her identity as one of the country’s exciting emerging young artists. With Mirror, however, she reveals a side of herself that feels more open, more assured and perhaps more vulnerable than ever before.
“Writing Mirror comes from a place of deep hurt,” Sasha explains. “It’s about manipulation and gaslighting, where I was honestly asking myself if there was something wrong with me, or was there something deeper?”
The idea of a mirror became the perfect metaphor for that uncertainty.
“Mirror represents a feeling of doubt and self-questioning. Looking into someone’s eyes and seeing my own reflection, or is it theirs?”
It is a deeply personal starting point, but one Sasha hopes listeners will recognise within their own experiences. At its core, Mirror explores what happens when another person causes you to question your own perception, and the strength it takes to eventually find your way back to yourself.
While the subject matter carries emotional weight, the recording itself took Sasha somewhere completely unexpected.
Working once again with producer Jono Greyling, the pair found an energy in the studio that transformed the song into something bolder and more buoyant.
“In my head, I wasn’t quite sure how it would sound when we started recording, but very quickly the vibe became something I wasn’t expecting, bouncy and booming, something that Jono Greyling and I couldn’t stop bopping to the whole time. It was such a blast to record!”
That contrast between vulnerable storytelling and an uplifting production has become an important part of Sasha’s developing sound. Inspired by artists including Ed Sheeran, Noah Kahan and Jeremy Loops, she is drawn to music that creates an atmosphere while still allowing the story at the centre of the song to shine.
“Listening to other artists, their lyrics, their journeys, stories and atmosphere, gives me goosebumps, and I want to be able to recreate that in my own way.”
Finding Her Voice
Sasha’s relationship with songwriting began long before her first official release. She started writing songs at just nine years old, although she remembers melodies living in her head even before she began putting them onto paper.
Since then, music has remained a constant.
A multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, piano, drums and ukulele, Sasha has gradually developed a musical identity rooted in curiosity and emotional honesty. Her earlier release Mountain Breeze introduced audiences to her sound and received airplay across stations including KFM, GrootFM and Helderberg FM, alongside interviews on Smile FM and an appearance on Expresso on SABC 3.
Her subsequent releases, including Umoya and ONE, have continued to reveal different sides of the young songwriter, each marking another step towards understanding the artist she wants to become.
“There’s definitely a progression of sound with each song I write, and since Umoya I feel I’ve found a deepened sense of empowerment to continue this incredible journey,” she says.
That growth has not simply been about finding a genre or defining a particular sound. For Sasha, it has been about discovering the kind of relationship she wants her music to have with the people listening.
“I feel like each release has helped me understand who I am as an artist and what kind of connection I want to create with my audience. The response to my music has been really encouraging, especially hearing people tell me that they connect with the emotions and stories behind the songs.”
It is a lesson that has encouraged her to lean even further into vulnerability.
“I’ve learned that being honest and vulnerable resonates the most. People don’t just want to hear a song, they want to feel something and see a part of themselves in it. That’s taught me to trust my own story, stay true to my sound, and not be afraid to put real emotion into my music.”
Mirror is perhaps the clearest example of that philosophy yet.
“I think Mirror is the most open I’ve been about my experiences yet, and I really want to build on this. I want to create more songs with honest emotions, but that can also feel quite daunting.”
An Artist Still Discovering What Comes Next
Rather than rushing to define exactly who she needs to be as an artist, Sasha is allowing that identity to develop naturally.
“To be honest, sometimes I feel I found my brand, and sometimes I wonder if I ever will. I think being open to all possibilities, and learning from other artists who I identify with really motivates me.”
It is this openness that makes Sasha’s journey particularly exciting. Instead of treating each release as a finished statement of who she is, she sees every song as another opportunity to learn, experiment and grow.
“Umoya and Mirror are both powerful songs, and they’re also a part of me that’s not afraid to speak my truth. I’m proud of how we’ve grown together.”
For Mirror, Sasha’s hopes are ultimately simple: that the song reaches the people who need to hear it.
“Mirror definitely feels like a step up, and I’m really excited to see where it goes. I hope whoever it reaches will resonate with my lyrics.”
And while Sasha’s ambitions stretch far beyond South Africa, she is keeping a sense of humour about exactly how big those dreams might become.
“Next year, Noah Kahan and I will be sipping Rooibos and gluten-free rusks together, writing an awesome song!”
Considering Sasha Burn’s journey so far, perhaps it is best not to rule anything out.
With every release, she is becoming more willing to tell the truth, more confident in the stories she wants to share and increasingly comfortable with the fact that becoming an artist does not necessarily mean having everything figured out.
Sometimes, it simply means being brave enough to look into the mirror and write about what you see.
