Scenario Productions Announces Landmark 2026 Production at Die Centurion Teater, with Open Auditions Set for 4 July
Scenario Productions is proud to announce the return of Hairspray – The Musical to the professional South African stage for the first time since 2007. The production will run from 22 October to 7 November 2026 at Die Centurion Teater, marking a landmark moment for musical theatre audiences in Gauteng and beyond.
Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray follows the irrepressible Tracy Turnblad, a teenager with a big dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show, the hottest teen television programme in town. What begins as a quest for the spotlight quickly becomes something far greater – a joyful, fearless challenge to segregation, prejudice and small-mindedness. Filled with infectious music, explosive choreography and larger-than-life characters, Hairspray is a feel-good musical with a fearless heart and a deeply resonant message about inclusion, equality and the courage to stand up for what is right.
As Scenario Productions’ flagship professional production for 2026, Hairspray brings together the scale and energy of a major Broadway musical with the immediacy of live theatre in an intimate venue.
The award-winning creative leadership behind Scenario Youth’s acclaimed production of Peter Pan Jr will helm the production, bringing together musical theatre experience, performer development and a proven track record of ambitious work at Die Centurion Teater. With directors Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe and Lian Sachse, Musical Director Luigia Casaleggio (Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, Pretty Woman), award nominated costume and set designer Ashleigh Ann Hilton and acclaimed choreographer Pinto Ferreira, this production is set to be world class.

OPEN AUDITIONS: THE SEARCH FOR TRACY TURNBLAD
Scenario Productions will host open auditions for all principal and ensemble roles on Saturday, 4 July 2026. A central focus of the casting campaign will be the search for the performer to lead the production as Tracy Turnblad, one of musical theatre’s great leading roles; demanding humour, heart, vocal strength, physical expression and an unshakeable confidence.

Roles being auditioned include Tracy Turnblad, Link Larkin, Penny Pingleton, Seaweed J. Stubbs, Motormouth Maybelle, Velma Von Tussle, Amber Von Tussle, Wilbur Turnblad, Corny Collins, Little Inez, The Dynamites, Council Members and ensemble performers. Please note that the role of Edna Turnblad has been cast internally and will not be auditioned.
