South Africa’s leading ballet company returns to Johannesburg
after thrilling Gauteng audiences in December
The world’s most loved ballet comes to Johannesburg as Global Star Events and Cape Ballet Africa present the legendary Swan Lake at the Teatro, Montecasino from 07 August for a strictly limited season. A masterpiece that has captivated audiences for generations, Swan Lake remains the pinnacle of classical ballet – a timeless tale of love, magic and sacrifice. Set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent and soaring score, this breathtaking production weaves a story of passion, betrayal and eternal devotion.
Prince Siegfried’s heart is captured by Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan by day. Their fates entwine in a powerful struggle against evil, where love must prove stronger than the sorcery that seeks to tear them apart.
Celebrated for artistic excellence and expressive storytelling, Cape Ballet Africa brings dramatic intensity and elegance to this cherished classic. Opulent sets, sumptuous costumes, and iconic, enduring choreography combine to create a ballet experience that will stir your soul and leave you breathless.
Experience the grandeur, grace and emotional power of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in Johannesburg’s most spectacular theatre setting. This new production is created and performed by a 50-strong member company, featuring choreography and stage direction by Georgian born, now London based former principal ballerina with the English National Ballet, Elena Glurjidze. Serendipitously, her final performance with the English National Ballet was as Odette/Odile in Derek Deane’s Swan Lake at the London Coliseum on 18 January 2015, the role she first danced with the Company in 2002.
For this brand new South African premiere exquisite costumes are designed by Marcel Meyer with magnificent sets by Michael Mitchell; the same team that created the grand designs for the double Naledi Award nominated The Nutcracker.
