South African singer-songwriter Christi, is set to make waves in the music industry with the release of her highly anticipated debut album, FALL APART.
The album is a pop masterpiece infused with 80’s synth and pop-rock influences that capture the essence of her personal and musical journey.
Reflecting on the title of the album, the artist shares: “My first single was called ‘Fall Apart’, and I actually didn’t want to make it the name of the album. However, I just always came back to it. I feel the album reflects many of the trails that I have experienced in life. The songs on the album were written over the past 8 years. It reveals how I’ve fallen apart over the years, yet it also shows how I’ve grown. After falling apart, better things tend to come together.”
The album comprises eleven tracks, each weaving a unique narrative of life experiences, including heartbreak, self-doubt, depression, alcohol abuse, and even sexual assault. Despite addressing heavy topics, the album is presented in a catchy, fun way, with upbeat elements inspired by 80’s music and early 2000’s pop-rock.
It was produced by Daniel Baron, with additional contributions from Johan Viljoen (Zebraman and BOBBEJAN). Christi collaborated with various writers on the album, showcasing her versatility and ability to convey vulnerable emotions in a relatable and accessible manner.
Some of her favourite tracks on the album include Playing and One Step. Playing stands out as her most vulnerable song, narrating one of her worst experiences. In contrast, One Step serves as her feel-good anthem, inspired by The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac, creating a modern sound that encourages listeners to embrace the moment.
The writing process for the album began in 2016, with recording commencing during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The experience meant a lot to Christi, who shares: “I got to work with some remarkable people. Not only was it a fun and creative recording process, but I also learned so much from them. I loved seeing my music change and develop into its full potential, and I couldn’t have done it without my mentors and producers.”
To celebrate the launch of her album, she will also be releasing a brand-new single. LOVE BURN is a classic breakup song and was written by the artist herself. It is an upbeat track, combining elements of modern-day music and sounds from the early 2000s.
“After a long-term relationship ended, I came to realise that I didn’t really know the person I was dating. I saw a different side of him. I learned his perspective of the relationship and it wasn’t what I expected. I was hurt and did what miss Taylor Swift does best, I wrote a song about it,” she shares about her fifth radio single.
LOVE BURN can now be heard on all streaming platforms and the music video of the song will be available soon.
Christi has wanted to be a performer for as long as she can remember, a passion sparked by her father, who was a DJ. She currently lives in Potchefstroom and is devoting all her time to her music career.
She is also embarking on an internship at her church, focusing on worship and campus ministry. She also has plans to learn German and travel to Germany or Austria in 2024.
With aspirations to perform more shows in South Africa and potentially release new music, Christi is poised for an exciting year ahead.
Over the past few years, the music industry has taught the artist to stay true to and develop her own sound, which is exactly what she did with her debut album.
“You cannot please everybody, and I have learned that it’s easier being myself and that’s when I make the best music,” she concludes.
