Mauritius is paradise in more ways than one. To give golfers the opportunity to experience some of the island’s exciting, naturally exquisite courses, World Leisure Holidays (WLH), in association with Beeld, will be hosting a week-long golf tournament in Mauritius next year.

Golfers of all abilities are invited to join this first of its kind event, which will be played on three of the island’s renowned signature courses, from 7 to 14 September 2024.

According to Elaine Durr, operations director of WLH, the decision to host the tournament in Mauritius was easy. “Mauritius is the ideal location for a tournament of this kind because it boasts courses that are among the world’s most spectacular and are intended for golfers of any level. What’s more, it’s only four hours from South Africa.”

Participants will be treated to four nights at Mauritian hotel group SunLife’s five-star Sugar Beach Resort, and three nights at its five-star Long Beach Resort, respectively. The former was recently renovated and offers an exciting combination of the past and the present, with glamorous elements of yesteryear and modern luxuries for an unforgettable holiday experience, while the latter offers chic and modern accommodation along the untamed east coast.

The tournament will be played across three of the island’s most spectacular courses: Ile aux Cerfs, an 18-hole par-72 championship golf course designed by Bernhard Langer; Anahita golf course, an 18-hole par-72 championship golf course designed by Ernie Els; and the technically challenging 18-hole par-72 championship Tamarina golf course, the longest on the island, designed by Rodney Wright.

Says Durr: “Playing the tournament across three courses will not only challenge golfers’ skills and abilities but will also showcase the savoir-faire of the island and its offerings. It’s all about golfing in paradise.”

Commenting on joining forces with WLH for this unforgettable experience, Cornette Zietsman brand manager at Beeld says: “We have been working with WLH on various successful projects for some time now, which is why we are excited to be part of this unique and exclusive golf week. What makes it extra special is that players can bring along their spouse, and we believe that our readers will enjoy a week of sand, sea, golf, and socializing.”

To add to the excitement, participants will be accompanied on this incredible trip by the likes of JP Duminy, Breyton Paulse, Alwyn Hollenbach and Johnny Davids, who are all looking forward to some sun, sea, and swinging.

“Mauritius ticks every single box possible. It’s a short flight from Johannesburg, no visas required beforehand, the weather and people are amazing, the golf courses are on par with the rest of the world. Furthermore, their hotels and food, entertainment is just perfect. It is going to be nice to soak up the warm sun, sip on some cocktails and enjoy the golf, and let’s not forget the amazing beaches and warm waters of Mauritius,” says Duminy.

This is echoed by Paulse, who comments: “I look forward to making wonderful memories and, of course, trying out the other activities, apart from golf, because it’s always fun. Mauritius also gives you that delightful holiday feeling, and it’s a beautiful destination with the most stunning golf courses, so I’m very excited.”

Hollenbach and Davids, from kykNET’s Ysters op die Landgoed, are equally excited.

“Mauritius is on everyone’ bucket list,” says Davids. “I can’t wait to experience the people and culture of the island and making new friends while playing a few rounds of golf on courses designed by Ernie Els and Rodney Wright – what an honour!”

Hollenbach adds: “While I was playing professional rugby, I had very little opportunity for golf, and after my retirement, I looked forward to spending more time on the course. Apart from the fact that I have never played in Mauritius and am looking forward to the challenge, I also feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful opportunity.”
