Trade Winds Sauvignon Blanc 2021 triumphed as the best Sauvignon Blanc at the 2022 Trophy Wine Show, winning the Sunday Times Trophy with a top score of 97/100.
Trophy Wine Show, South Africa’s premier wine competition, is internationally acclaimed for its meticulous judging and illustrious international and local judging panel, chaired by wine authority Michael Fridjhon. The Awards function for the 2022 Trophy Wine Show was hosted in Cape Town at Investec, the show’s headline sponsor, on 6 July. 673 wines were entered into this year’s Trophy Wine Show. Of these only 29 won gold medals, from which 20 were awarded trophies.
Trade Winds’ heritage is in the adventures of its founders, Martin Voigt and Richard Wells. “A love of wine from an early age was fuelled by far flung international travels providing the opportunity to enjoy wines from around the world. Good wine has long been the choice accompaniment to any significant rendezvous and Trade Winds’ range of wines aims to preserve this special tradition. A mutual feeling that the true quality of South African wines is often under-appreciated internationally seeded the ambition; to produce distinguished wine to help raise the profile of brand South African locally and internationally. This led to a gratifying journey collaborating with several knowledgeable hands in the South African wine industry, most notably Honorary Cape Wine Master and Master Blender Colin Frith, culminating in the birth of Trade Winds Wine, “says Martin.
Martin continues “I was flying home over the Atlantic with a tail wind when the name came to me, ‘Trade Winds!’. In the air and on the sea, winds play a significant role in one’s journey, as do winds in shaping the quality of grapes and the resultant wine. We entered the market with a Sauvignon Blanc 2021 and a Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, both of which we felt represented our vision. We could not be happier, as newcomers, with the positive reception we have received from the wine industry; having been honoured with the Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc for our maiden vintage at such a renowned wine show. Our Cabernet Sauvignon has also done us proud, winning a Silver medal with 90 points, at the 2022 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).”
The Trade Winds Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a harmonious blend of grapes from low-yielding old Sauvignon Blanc vines planted on cool elevated mountain slopes in Stellenbosch (for richer tropical notes and softer acidity), and cool-climate Elgin grapes (for greener herbaceous characters and minerality). The grapes were handpicked and stored in a cold room before crushing and de-stemming. The free run juice was allowed to settle before fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by lees contact for one month.
This beautifully balanced Sauvignon Blanc is generous in style with a full nose layered with citrus, pineapple, and peach. The palate is complex, combining the character of fresh cut grass and green herbs with ripe tropical fruit notes of peach and apricot, along with an enjoyable level of minerality. The wine is fresh with soft acidity, a good mouthfeel and a round lingering finish.
