THEATRE ON THE SQUARE is thrilled to introduce the Classical Music Concert Series for winter 2024, featuring a diverse program highlighting the skills of some of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians.
These concerts have been on-going for over two decades on a regular weekly basis.
In support of our musicians and for the upliftment of our public.
Theatre on the Square is the only regular, weekly fixture of its kind for classical music.
Tickets: Unreserved tickets will be available at the box office from 12.30pm.
Time of Concert: 1pm every Friday
Ticket price: R100 or R60 for members.
CONCERT LINE UP:
- 5th September – Baritone JEAN DU PLESSIS and pianist SONJA VAN ZYL present a captivating lunchtime concert of richly expressive songs, blending powerful vocals and lieder with piano artistry.
- 12th September – Acclaimed violinist ELENA ZLATKOVA will be accompanied on piano by DR ELIZE KRUGER for a captivating lunchtime concert. Works to include Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 3 “Allegro”, Cesar Franck – Sonato for piano and violin – “Allegretto molto moderato” and “Allegro”.
- 19th September – Performance by LAURA PAUNO and RENTIA VENTER. Works will include the Mozart Sonata in D Major for four hands, Grieg dance, a Poulenc Sonata and a solo Beethoven (32 variations).
- 26th September – Discover the rich meeting of African indigenous sounds and global influences with the ASAKHE CUNTULANA ENSEMBLE. Featuring bow harp, string quartet and voice. The programme includes works such as Holy Nights and Ideale.
- 3RD October – Visiting British cellist MICHAEL KEVIN JONES and NICOLEEN GIBBONS on piano will be performing works by Rodrigo, Vivaldi, Bruch and Saint – Saens.
- 10th October – Popular Opera Diva MICHELLE VEENEMANS will be performing again with violinist MIRO CHAKARYAN and SONJA VAN ZYL on piano.
- 17th October – DR LUSHEN GOVENDER presents an afternoon of Indian Classical music with his three piece ensemble which includes works by Thyagaraja.
- 24th October – MORNE VAN HEERDEN (clarinet) and SONJA VAN ZYL (piano) presents REED AND RESONANCE. A beautiful selection of works for clarinet and piano including Malcolm Arnold’s Sonatina for clarinet and piano, E Chausson’s Andante et Allegro and Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Clarinate Sonata.
- 31st October – PAUL RABENOWITZ and Soprano MONTAIGNE CAMPHER present music for voice and guitar by Monteverdi, Hahn, Dowland, Mozart, Schubert, Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
- 7th November – Join AMANDA BLANKFIELD – KOSEFF on vocals and guitar, with piano accompaniment by EVELYN GREEN, as she sings songs and arias from the folk, musical theatre and light classical genres.
- 14th November – UMOYO WIND ENSEMBLE present works by Bach, Shostakovich and Leonard Bernstein.
- 21st November – Experience magic of the opera with the B SHARP MUSIC ACADEMY. The repertoire will include compositions by Verdi, Mozart, Pucchini and local South African compositions.
- 28th November – Classical guitar solo concert with PAUL RABENOWITZ. Music by Bach, Weiss, Koehne and Kernis.
- 5TH December – SMOKE J LAWRENCE will be performing. Don’t miss the African King of the Blues and his band.
All concerts take place on FRIDAY AFTERNOON at 13:00.
Tickets are available an hour before at the theatre box office.
Seats are unreserved so we encourage you to arrive early.
