Some songs arrive fully formed. Others take their time – sometimes years – before they find their moment. For South African pop singer-songwriter Cailyn Shelby, “Addicted To You” is one of those songs. Born from the crackle of a fire, shaped through years of demos and rediscovered on a long-haul flight, the track finally gets its moment as Cailyn releases the intoxicating new single.

Blending infectious pop melodies with gritty guitars, a driving bassline and emotionally honest songwriting, “Addicted To You” explores the intoxicating early stages of a relationship, when someone consumes your thoughts and makes everything else seem to disappear, even when a small voice tells you they may not be good for you.

Ironically, the song itself became something Cailyn couldn’t let go of.

“Addicted To You” began several years ago in an unlikely setting: sitting in front of a fire during a short music production course. While experimenting with beats one night, Cailyn decided to record the sound of the flames crackling. She chopped up the recording and began building a beat around it. As the track took shape, she started mumbling melodies and random lyric ideas into her phone.

The following day, she picked up her guitar and wrote what would eventually become “Addicted To You.”

A few years later, Cailyn and acclaimed producer Daniel Baron began developing a demo of the song. Although they always believed there was something special about it, the track never quite found its moment. It didn’t fit alongside the songs on Cailyn’s debut album, Growing Pains, while simultaneously feeling as though it wasn’t quite finished enough to stand on its own.

So, the song was put away, joining countless voice notes and unfinished demos on Cailyn’s phone.

That changed while Cailyn was living in the UK and travelling regularly between England and South Africa. During one long flight, she began listening through some of her old demos and rediscovered “Addicted To You.”

“I kept going back to it,” says Cailyn. “It reminded me how much I’d always loved the song, and how much I still wanted to finish it.”

When she arrived back in South Africa, Cailyn messaged Daniel with a simple realisation: “We have to finish this song.”

“Ironically, somewhere along the way, I’d become addicted to ‘Addicted To You’,” she says.

Back in the studio, Cailyn and Daniel began pulling the song apart and rebuilding it from the ground up. They reworked the arrangement, identified what had been missing and recorded new vocals. Working alongside Marc Ronin, they ultimately shaped the track into the polished, energetic version being released today.

For Cailyn, the song needed more than just a new production, it needed time.

“It had taken a few years to get there, but I think the song just needed the right time, and for us to grow with it a little, before it was ready,” she says.

At its core, “Addicted To You” captures the push and pull of an intoxicating relationship. It is about that moment when one person becomes all you want to talk to, all you want to see, and simply being around them makes the frustrations and stresses of everyday life disappear.

But beneath the euphoria is an awareness that something may not be quite right.

“You know there could be danger in it, but the feeling is so addictive that you choose it anyway,” Cailyn explains.

That tension is reflected in the production. Gritty guitars and a driving bassline bring out the song’s darker, obsessive edge, while polished pop melodies keep it euphoric and exhilarating rather than heavy. The result is a track that captures both sides of the experience: the thrill of wanting someone completely and the quiet knowledge that they might not be good for you.

“That tension between knowing something might be bad for you and wanting it anyway is really the heart of Addicted To You,” says Cailyn. “It’s still one of my favourite things about the song.”
