Theatre on the Square proudly presents the highly acclaimed solo show ÎLE, written and performed by the talented Sophie Joans and directed by Rob van Vuuren. Following its success at the NAF 2022 by winning a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award and earning a Best Actress nomination at Woordfees 2022, “Île” arrives in Johannesburg after captivating audiences in Cape Town and in the UK.
Set against the lush backdrop of Mauritius, ÎLE tells the captivating story of an 18-year-old girl’s journey of self-discovery as she explores her ancestral home. Written by award-winning theatre maker Sophie Joans, whose personal connection to the narrative adds depth and authenticity, ÎLE is a poignant exploration of identity, family, and the complexities of heritage.
Drawing on Sophie Joans’ background in stand-up comedy, ÎLE offers a unique blend of humour and heart, keeping audiences engaged from start to finish. Directed by South African comedy legend Rob van Vuuren, the play incorporates explosive physical theatre, adding an extra layer of excitement to the storytelling.
Critics rave about ÎLE with Dave Mann from The Critter calling it “a hell of a play”
and praising its superb writing, while The Cape Robyn describes it as “deliciously captivating” and “uplifting, funny, and inspiring.”
Siobhan Cassidy from Call Off The Search commends the play’s slick and funny writing, “with a very satisfying circularity to all the plots and subplots.”
