Enjoy these classic movies for just R50 at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas.

As the new year starts, and the tricky act of juggling the ‘Janu-worry’ budget comes into play, everyone is looking for a bargain to get them through the month. With Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema promotion continuing through January and into February 2025, you get to enjoy some real cinema classics at the classic price of just R50 per ticket.

“We’ve secured some more iconic movie titles for the whole family to enjoy, as we all ease ourselves into another new year. These include Interstellar, which releases on Friday 03 January, followed by Groundhog Day from 10 January. The Pursuit of Happyness fills the big screen from 17 January with No Country for Old Men releasing the following week, and The Truman Show on 31 January. The much-loved film, 10 Things I Hate About You, sees us survive and exit January, with its release on 07 February,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor.

Continuing this popular promotion, January’s line-up spans a number of movie genres, ensuring there is something for everyone to watch during the holiday period, either as repeat viewing or for a first-time big screen experience.”

Getting into the spirit of the new year, Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema line-up includes some all-time favourites. And even though budgets might be tight, the affordable price gives you the ticket to revisit iconic movies or to discover them for the first time on the big screen.

The festive line-up of Throwback Cinema titles for January includes some stand-out classics. Launching 2025 is the 2014 sci-fi epic adventure, Interstellar, which released on Friday 03 January. When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans. Directed and written by acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, the film features an award-winning, all-star cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, Mackenzie Foy, David Oyelowo, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck and a young Timothée Chalamet (soon to be seen as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown). Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.

Repeating itself over and over is the 1993 romantic holiday comedy, Groundhog Day, which releases on 10 January – and, with a R50 ticket price, you can afford to watch it over again! A narcissistic and self-centred weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day. Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott, the film is directed by Harold Ramis and has a running time of 1hr 41mins. What would you do if you were stuck in the same day… over and over? Anything you want and everything your heart desires.

Inspired by a true story, the 2006 biographical drama, The Pursuit of Happyness fills the big screen from 17 January. The film stars award-winning actor Will Smith as a struggling salesman who is given custody of his son (played by Smith’s son, Jaden), just as he is poised to begin a life-changing professional career. The film is directed by Gabriele Muccino and also stars Thandiwe Newton and Brian Howe.

No Country for Old Men releases at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas the following week, from 24 January. This 2007 crime thriller follows the violence and mayhem that ensue after a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong and over two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande. Directed and written by the award-winning Coen brothers, Ethan and Joel, the film features an all-star cast including Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin and Kelly Macdonald. In the open country, you can find anything… but every fortune leaves a trail.

The last Throwback Cinema title for January is the 1998 sci-fi comedy, The Truman Show, which releases on 31 January. An insurance salesman, Truman Burbank (played by Jim Carrey), begins to suspect that his whole life is actually part of a huge TV set on some sort of reality TV show. Ed Harris is the executive producer Christof, who orchestrates “The Truman Show,” a live broadcast of Truman’s every move, every day, captured by hidden cameras. As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether or not to act on it. Directed by Peter Weir, the film also stars Natascha McElhone, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich and Holland Taylor. All the world’s a stage…

When February arrives, we can all breathe a little better, but Throwback Cinema still promises some top-class classic titles at the affordable price of R50. or07 February. Releasing on 07 February, 10 Things I Hate About You welcomes the second month of 2025. A high-school boy, Cameron, cannot date Bianca until her anti-social older sister, Kat, has a boyfriend. So Cameron pays a mysterious boy, Patrick, to charm Kat. This 1999 coming-of-age romantic comedy, adapted from William Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew, stars the late Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. There are so many different ways to hate. Count them yourself.
