South African singer-songwriter Amy Tjasink has released the official music video for her deeply moving single “Shadows of the Sun” delivering a breathtaking cinematic tribute to love, loss, resilience, and the unbreakable bond she shares with her father. Filmed across the sweeping landscapes of Noordhoek Beach and Chapman’s Peak, the visual transforms Amy’s personal journey through grief into a powerful story of healing and hope, while honouring the shared musical dream that continues to guide her forward.

Conceived by Amy herself and brought to life by videographer and editor Josh Adams, alongside camera assistant James Cawood, the music video transforms the emotional core of the song into a powerful cinematic journey.

“We wanted to honour the meaning of the words in the song by creating a cinematic visualizer,” explains Amy. “Noordhoek Beach felt like the perfect spot to capture the feelings I experienced while writing the song.”

The video opens on a sparse, lonely beach, with Amy standing alone in an empty landscape that symbolizes the isolation and emotional weight of grief. Carrying her guitar through the “nothingness,” she eventually opens a guitar case to discover her father’s guitar alongside treasured photographs and memories of their life together.

As the story unfolds, Amy revisits moments shared with her father and arrives at a realization that his love, belief, and encouragement still remain with her. The visual narrative shifts from sorrow toward hope as she rises, dances, and continues forward, determined to honour their shared dream through music.

“The video is really about finding the strength to keep going,” says Amy. “Every guitar strum, every chord, every note is my way of carrying our dream forward.”

The video concludes on Chapman’s Peak, overlooking her hometown, where Amy raises her guitar toward the sky in a symbolic promise to never give up.

Amy originally considered incorporating old performance footage of herself and her father but instead chose to feature photographs and symbolic storytelling after struggling to find usable archival clips.

“The best way to honour him was through the memories themselves,” she shares. “Those moments will live on forever through this song and this video.”

The project also carries a deeply personal full-circle significance. Noordhoek Beach was the location where Amy filmed her very first music video over a decade ago alongside Josh Adams and her father.

“It felt incredibly special returning there,” Amy reflects. “My upcoming album has a strong theme of growing up in the Deep South, so including Noordhoek Beach became part of that story too.”

Released on Mid-May, “Shadows of the Sun” quickly resonated with listeners for its emotional honesty and uplifting spirit. The single serves as the lead release from Amy Tjasink’s highly anticipated upcoming album Valley Girl, due for release on 14 August.

The song was inspired by Amy’s father surviving a devastating stroke that permanently altered his life, leaving him mentally and physically disabled. Despite the profound changes, the bond between father and daughter – and their shared love of music – remained unwavering.

“My dad has always been my biggest supporter,” says Amy. “Music was something we shared and it was both of our dreams. Even though so much has changed, that belief hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still with me every single day.”

Rather than dwelling in loss, “Shadows of the Sun” focuses on legacy, guidance, and perseverance. Drawing inspiration from nature, African rhythms, indie folk textures, and uplifting pop melodies, the song delivers a vibrant and distinctly South African sound while telling a deeply universal story.

The imagery and emotional direction of the track were also inspired by The Lion King, particularly the iconic scene where Mufasa teaches Simba about the balance between light and shadow – a metaphor Amy connected deeply with while reflecting on her father’s enduring presence in her life.

“For me, ‘Shadows of the Sun’ means that even in the unknown and in the places that feel scary, I’m never really alone,” Amy explains. “That kind of love doesn’t disappear. It stays with you, it guides you, and it gives you the courage to keep going.”

Following the success of her breakout hit “Feels Like Mzansi” – which reached #1 on the Good Hope FM Hit 30 and saw Amy perform at the SAFTAs – “Shadows of the Sun” marks a bold and heartfelt new chapter for the rising artist.

With both the single and its cinematic visual companion now released, Amy Tjasink continues to establish herself as one of South Africa’s most emotionally authentic and compelling emerging voices — an artist unafraid to turn personal stories into moments of connection, healing, and hope.
