Soul, Rhythm and Connection – Funky Nature Blend Soul and Indie-Hop Groove Heartbeat on New Song and Video ‘Together’

With their new single and video ‘Together’, London-based collective Funky Nature deliver a groove-driven anthem that bridges soulful warmth and indie-hop rhythm with effortless charm. The song captures the band’s signature fusion of organic, live-instrument sound underscored by lyrical honesty and a spirit of connection.

“‘Together’ began as a desire to slow things down and really feel the moment,” says producer, guitarist and vocalist Jason Fonfe. “I wanted to write something that celebrates the small, everyday things that keep us close. It’s about that human pulse that runs through everything when you stop to listen.”

Taking inspiration from the sensual intimacy of classic soul and filtering it through a contemporary indie-hop lens, ‘Together’ unfolds with understated confidence. Warm guitar tones and smooth vocal interplay glide across a relaxed rhythm section held steady by Gareth Haze on drums and Neil Jackson on bass. The dual vocals of Hannah Jones Allen and Jason Fonfe bring melodic grace and emotional depth, while Charles Mould, known as Red Sea, delivers a raw, rhythmic counterpoint that grounds the track in truth and immediacy.

At its core, ‘Together’ is a reflection on human closeness and connection. “We live in such a fast world, and sometimes the real beauty is in slowing down,” Jason adds. “This song reminds me that connection doesn’t need fireworks. It just needs honesty, warmth, and groove.”

The accompanying music video echoes that sentiment. Vibrant yet unforced, it captures the chemistry between the performers and the unspoken bond that drives Funky Nature’s sound. Every shot feels alive with colour, rhythm and emotion, reflecting the same authenticity that defines the music.

‘Together’ epitomises what Funky Nature describe as their Soulful Indie-Hop Groove: a seamless blend of live indie instrumentation, soul-infused melodies and expressive hip-hop storytelling. It feels unmistakably modern yet rooted in timeless musicality – melodic, organic and deeply human.

With echoes of Gorillaz, The Roots, Massive Attack and Glass Animals, ‘Together’ stands as a bold and heartfelt statement from a band redefining what collaboration can sound like today. Funky Nature remind us that in a world of noise and distraction, the purest rhythm is the one that brings people together.

Funky Nature Bio

After years of performing and writing in various indie bands, Jason Fonfe decided to try his hand at music production. In the quiet, leafy suburb of Datchet, he began honing his skills in recording and artist development. Working closely with the upper-class alt-rock scene from nearby Windsor and Eton, Jason found himself producing a wide range of guitar-driven music.

It was during this time that young artists from across Slough began visiting his Big Mouth Studios – talented Black and Asian rappers whose rhythmic flow, lyrical creativity, and vocal dexterity left a strong impression. Although Jason had been a devoted hip-hop fan since the 1990s, it was his work with these local rappers, including the Hood Kings, that brought him closer to the genre than ever before.

Inspired by these collaborations, Jason began to imagine a new kind of sound – one that fused indie guitar music with rap and hip-hop energy. While there had been famous crossovers in the past, such as Aerosmith with Run-D.M.C. or Ice-T’s Body Count, Jason’s vision was to merge these distinct styles into something fresh, cohesive, and socially progressive.

Reaching out to a network of musicians and rappers, Jason began gigging around London, developing songs that left intentional space for freestyle verses and spontaneous creativity. Unlike singers, rappers could instantly connect with a track’s rhythm and contribute on the spot – leading to live shows where performers who had never rehearsed together would join forces in real time.

Audiences were often astonished by the chemistry and flow of these performances, refusing to believe that what they were witnessing was completely unrehearsed. From this vibrant fusion of styles and energy, Indie-Hop was born – a genre that captures the soulful groove of indie rock and the lyrical pulse of hip-hop.

To reflect the spirit of this sound – organic, rhythmic, and rooted in collaboration – the project took on the name Funky Nature.
