Glitz and glamour to celebrate business.

OntbytSAKE, South Africa’s leading entertainment programme, is not only there to provide excellent television entertainment and give the very best marketing opportunities to businesses but also understands the challenges that small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs face and that the role they play in promoting the economy is often underestimated.
To recognise the unsung heroes of our economy for their excellence, innovation, job creation and purposeful leadership, the Lottoland ontbytSAKE Business of the Year Awards were presented on Thursday evening, 23 October in Paarl at a glittering gala event at the prestigious Nederburg Wine Estate. It was an iconic evening of inspiration, networking opportunities, socialising, great music and the celebration of business acumen.
Several celebrities such as Bok van Blerk, Hykie Berg, Leah and Cindy Swanepoel were among the role players who celebrated “Our People, Our Businesses, Our Pride” with ontbytSAKE.
The ontbytSAKE presenters, Dawie Roodt, Charlene Lackay and Leon Gropp, hosted the event masterfully.
Lottoland South Africa’s Maryke Hayward (Marketing Director) said: “We see ontbytSAKE as a highly successful platform where businesses can gain valuable exposure to the public. At Lottoland, we believe in promoting entrepreneurial spirit and supporting local businesses that make a difference. That is why we have decided to step forward as Title Sponsor for these awards — to celebrate with ontbytSAKE their 25 years of inspiring stories and business success. We view ontbytSAKE as a trusted and successful business partner, and we salute them for their continued contribution to the growth of South African businesses.”
ontbytSAKE Owner and Executive Producer, Louis Mclaren added “As part of ontbytSAKE’s 25th anniversary celebration, we decided to give further exposure and recognition to the country’s small and medium businesses. The aim of this evening is to put BUSINESS in the spotlight. Each of these businessmen and women are winners in their own right, and they remain our people, our businesses and our pride.”
This year’s finalists represented diverse sectors of the economy, including agriculture, manufacturing, technology, hospitality and foods.
There were eight business categories, in which a total of 80 businesses participated. The judging process took place internally and was measured on the strength of the quality and watchability of the television inserts, the studio interviews, the placements on digital media or the billboard advertisements.
- The Overall Business Category winner was Henwil Chickens and winners in the entertainment category included – Anrich Herbst (with an excerpt of ‘Sonja Conradie’ from “Orkney Snork Nie”, and a singing item by Leon Gropp), Hykie Berg as Favourite Main Guest, and the beloved Anika de Beer as Most Popular Segment: weerSAKE.

Because ontbytSAKE is also known for supporting independent Afrikaans artists, recognition in this category was given to Renaldo Alberts of “RugTeenRug” music.
Melinda Meyer, Producer and Director of ontbytSAKE said: “ontbytSAKE’s 25-year success is due to small and medium-sized businesses and these awards are our way of honouring them – the backbone of our economy. The Lottoland ontbytSAKE Business of the Year Awards event gives us the platform to recognise, honour and introduce the real heroes of our economy to our audience. It contributes to the programme’s core values of inspiration and business insight and is the ideal opportunity to physically bring to life the success stories that viewers see on air.”
Die Lottoland ontbytSAKE Business of the Year awards will be broadcast on Saturday, 20 December, with highlights to be shown on the show on Saturday, 1 November, as well as on their various social media platforms.
