Following a triumphant, sold-out debut at Die Centurion Teater, Ingrid ‘n Vlam in die Sneeu is set to ignite stages across the Cape with a limited tour from 29 May to 1 June. Audiences in Durbanville, Paternoster, Strand, and Stellenbosch will have the rare opportunity to experience this stirring new theatrical work inspired by the impassioned love letters of literary icons Ingrid Jonker and André P. Brink.
Presented by Scenario Productions and Die Centurion Teater, this deeply moving production has been adapted from the celebrated collection Vlam in die Sneeu: Die liefdesbriewe tussen Jonker en Brink. This stage experience transforms their intimate correspondence into a powerful theatrical and musical journey.
Award winning actress Lizelle Pike delivers a searing portrayal of Ingrid Jonker, offering a performance that captures both the fragility and fire of one of South Africa’s most beloved literary figures.
Under the inspired direction of Nadia Beukes, Tiaan Kirsten-Lubbe, and Lian Sachse, the production unfolds as a lyrical exploration of love, longing, and the indomitable human spirit. “My hope for this production is that it will become what it should be to honour two people’s story and thereby inspire everyone who experiences it,” says Beukes.
The poetic narrative is crafted by award-winning writer Jak J Brits, who also provides original musical settings. “To tell the story of a legend, to rework and set her words to music, is an immense privilege,” says Brits. His interpretations breathe new life into Jonker’s poetry, especially selections from Rook en Oker, woven into a score that resonates with emotion and contemporary relevance.
Musical director and pianist Chanie Jonker completes the production’s sonic landscape, guiding audiences through the emotional terrain of Jonker’s inner world—where love burns, doubts echo, and every word sings with urgency.
Ingrid: ‘n Vlam in die Sneeu is more than a love story; it is a tribute to Jonker’s enduring voice, an invitation to witness the complexity of her spirit, and a reminder of the transformative power of poetry and music.
