Acclaimed local musician and songwriter Josh Klynsmith steps into a bold new chapter with the release of his debut solo single, “Rescue Me,” available now on all digital streaming platforms.
Having built a strong reputation as the drummer for Gangs of Ballet and currently performing with Matthew Mole, Josh is now embracing a new direction—one that sees him stepping forward as a solo artist, songwriter, and producer. “Rescue Me” is a deeply personal track that has been years in the making, evolving through different phases of his life and ultimately culminating in an emotive and dynamic production.
“This song is a personal one for me,” says Josh. “I wrote the verses a couple of years ago while I was living in Sri Lanka, but I struggled to find the right chorus. Later, after moving back to South Africa, the chorus finally came to me—of all places, in the shower! So, I love that this song is written from two very different stages in my life.”
A Labour of Love
The creative process behind “Rescue Me” was one of persistence and dedication. “Some songs just fall onto the page, but this one took time. It was a real labour of love,” Josh shares. “I don’t know how many times I broke it down and rebuilt it, but when I finally wrote the last word, I felt an immense sense of achievement—even though I knew I still had the mountain of recording and producing ahead of me.”
That mountain became more manageable with the help of his close friend and collaborator Matthew Mole, who co-produced the track. “Having Matt alongside me was amazing,” says Josh. “When you’re doing everything yourself, it’s easy to lose perspective, so his input was invaluable.” Josh recorded the vocals at Chapel Lane Studio in the UK, where the song was mixed by Brendyn Rossouw, and also worked with Tristan Carmichael, who helped capture the final vocal performance.
A New Musical Journey
With years of experience in the industry as a drummer, Josh is embracing the excitement of branching into a solo career. “I will always drum, but focusing on my own writing and solo music is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” he says. “I’m not sure exactly where this journey will lead, but I’m excited for the road ahead.”
“Rescue Me” is just the beginning—a song that not only marks his debut as a solo artist but also showcases his depth as a songwriter and producer. With heartfelt lyrics and rich instrumentation, the track captures the essence of seeking hope in uncertain times.
