Studio Universal has today announced that the award-winning, The Woman King, will air on the channel (DStv 112) on Tuesday, 31 December at 8 PM (CAT) Inspired by true events, Viola Davis stars in an action-packed story of an elite all-female unit of warriors determined to defend their nation.
The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Davis is supported by a star-studded cast, including John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After), Thuso Mbedu (Is’Thunzi), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), Adrienne Warren (Tina), Masali Baduza (Noughts + Crosses) and Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders).
The Woman King is produced by Westbrook Studios and Entertainment One, with international distribution handled by TriStar Pictures. The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens and Maria Bello. Producers include Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, and Julius Tennon, with Peter McAleese serving as one of the executive producers. The co-producers are Jayson de Rosner and Dale Butler.
