It’s been a decade since Cape Town’s favourite comedy band released an album, and this
time their usual brand of family friendly silliness is tackling the silly season.
The Brothers Streep’s new festive album, Putting The ‘Stmas’ Back Into Christmas, releases
today on your favourite music streaming service. There are songs about Christmas beetles,
the perils of holidaying in Cape Town and lamenting never being able to build a snowman. It
also includes covers of It Feels Like Christmas (from The Muppet Christmas Carol), Walking
In The Air (from The Snowman) and Somewhere In My Memory (from Home Alone). As
always, there’s something for everyone!
“We wanted to try to make the South African equivalent to the Boney M album we all grew
up listening to as kids. Something local that families would put on as they decorate their
Christmas trees while fighting over who gets to put the angel on the top,” says Simon van
Wyk, co-founder of the band. “We don’t need to be a festive staple in every home around
the world, we’re happy to settle for one or two homes in the southern suburbs. We can be
Bergvliet’s answer to Bublé,” says Dylan Hichens, the other co-founder.
This album mark’s their fourth release since their 2006 debut, “It Couldn’t Have Been Miss
Scarlett, She Was With Us At The Time…”. “In many ways this is a love letter to our first
album. When we started playing to comedy audiences we had to start fine tuning our songs
to mine as many jokes out of them as possible. But Scarlett never had that pressure – it was
more fun and free. For Stmas we went back to those roots,” says van Wyk. To celebrate
those roots, the band has made their debut album available on all streaming platforms for
the first time. “We realised that people might find our Christmas album and wonder what
else we’ve done, so we figured it would be a good time to make sure our back-catalogue
was readily available,” says Hichens.
Christmas is the genre these boys were always made for. Their catchy melodies, fun lyrics
and theatrical arrangements feel right at home on a Christmas album. If you need some
Christmas cheer this festive season, look no further than The Brothers Streep’s, Putting The
‘Stmas’ Back Intro Christmas.
