The legendary South African singer, director, and songwriter, Anton Goosen, mastered the art of enchanting listeners with his interesting lyrics and captivating tunes decades ago.
With his latest single and music video, GIGI, he once again proves why he is such a respected musician in the local music industry.
Like the song, the music video tells the story of a pole dancer from Velddrif on the Western Cape who now lives in Johannesburg (Devilsdorp) and must dance in a club to earn her living. Because she is such a wonderful woman, she catches the eye of her “prince” Jerman, who rescues her from her circumstances for a while. But as time goes on, she sees him less and less where they live together on the top floor of the Ponte Tower, a high round building near Hillbrow.
“GIGI is the second single and video from my latest album, ‘Sirkels’, and ties in with the theme of the album, which is about circles… Gigi spinning around the pole, eagles circling, water ripples, and it is exactly there where the eagle comes into play. But I am not going to give away the ending, and want to leave it open for interpretation,” the Liedjieboer shares about the meaning behind the track.
Niel van Deventer handled the production and direction of the video, while Marta Vorontsova was responsible for the animation aspect and Shaun Chad Smit for the editing. Besides Anton, Lise Swart, Neil Sandilands, Schalk Joubert, and Illimar Neitz can also be seen in the video.

GIGI follows in the footsteps of Bly By My, (My Lief), his rendition of a poem written by Antjie Krog, which was very well received.
Anton, commonly regarded as the father of Afrikaans rock, was born in 1946 in the Karoo and grew up in Kroonstad. Over the years, he has accumulated more hits than any other South African, including Silver de Lange, Boy van die suburbs, Byeboerwa, ’n Brief vir Simone, Kruidjie-roer-my-nie, Jantjie, Waterblommetjies, Harlekyn, Hanoverstraat, Trein na Matjiesfontein, Ta’ Mossie se sakkie-sakkie boeredans and many more.
He has released more than 20 albums, written music for several films, and has also been honoured with various awards during his decades-long career as a songwriter and singer, including SAMA, Innibos, and FAK awards for his lifelong contribution to music.
In 2022, he launched his own series of vellies, Jantjie Veldskoen, in collaboration with Vellies Boutique, and Anton Goosen: Liedjieboer, his life story written by well-known journalist Hanli Retief, was published by NB Publishers in 2020.
GIGI is now available on all digital streaming platforms and is one of those songs that admirers will talk about for a long time.
