1789 on stage at JOBURG THEATRE

Joburg Theatre in association with the Sibikwa Arts Centre is proud to host the acclaimed production, “1789”, for a short season in August. Supported by Théâtre du Soleil and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), “1789” played to sold out performances at the National Arts Festival, received several Naledi nominations and won the Naledi Award for Innovation in Theatre

Veteran directors Phyllis Klotz and Smal Ndaba [founders of the Sibikwa Arts Centre] have assembled an incredible ensemble of vibrant talented actors and crew who bring this historical masterpiece to life. “1789”, so named for the year of the French Revolution transports its audience to the streets of Paris – to a country in turmoil on the brink of a revolution – and follows the journey of a range of citizens and their rise against an oppressive regime in their quest for “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity”.

“This is not an adaptation of a French play” says co-director Phyllis Klotz. “We have stayed true to the themes of the piece as originally devised by Ariane Mnouchkine and Théâtre du Soleil. We have no doubt that the audience will feel the echoes of resonance ripple in another revolution”. Critics have praised the production for its rich, exceptional design and immersive theatrical experience. Robyn Sassen commented that “1789 unequivocally, raises the bar for theatre in South Africa. It shines with a rich and uncompromising skill in design, performance and professional give-and-take.”

Audiences can anticipate engaging with the cast adorned in period costume from the moment they enter the performance space in the rear of the Mandela Theatre. Under the musical direction of Joel Zuma, the cast brings French Revolutionary songs to life inviting the spectators to become active participants in the revolutionary journey. The multi–talented Wilhelm Disbergen has designed an inventive groundbreaking set and period costumes.

There are school performances on the mornings of the 8^th, 13^th, 14^th, 15^th, 16^th with special group discounts of R90 per learner for groups of ten or more.  Public Performances are at 19.30 on the 8^th & 15^th & 16^th at 15h00 9^th, 11^th, 17^th, 18^th.
