With a passion for serving, Darren Barnes went from what some would say is “rebellious” and unsure of his life goals to the innovative driven entrepreneur and award-winning CEO of a multi-faceted Holding Company – which has been a force to reckon with in Africa for over 16 years.
The 36-year-old founder and CEO of Perfect Solutions went against the grain to discover people, culture, various markets and economies across Africa and says he has “regrets, I had a few, but then again too few to mention” but huge lessons learned over this seventeen year journey.

Tell us about your career trajectory. How did you transition from uncertainty to becoming an award-winning CEO?
Darren Barnes started as a rebellious young person with uncertain life goals. However, he turned his back on stability and teaching careers to start his own business at the age of 19. Over the years, he discovered people, culture, and various markets across Africa, leading to his success as the CEO of Perfect Solutions.
What motivated you to venture into entrepreneurship at such a young age?
Despite societal expectations, Darren’s drive for independence and self-sufficiency pushed him to start his own business. He saw hustle as a way of survival, not just a lifestyle, and embraced the challenge.
How did your upbringing in Bonteheuwel shape your perspective on resourcefulness and community?
Growing up in a community where making do with limited resources was common, Darren learned the value of self-sufficiency. He witnessed families living together in tight spaces, which influenced his mindset and work ethic.
What role did charity work play in your journey?
Charity work allowed Darren to serve his community while escaping the harsh realities of daily life. It also deepened his understanding of the fight against apartheid, connecting personal passion with social impact.
How did you balance school, part-time jobs, and extracurricular activities?
To fund his lifestyle and participate in compulsory school activities, Darren took on part-time jobs. His determination to be self-sufficient drove him to manage multiple responsibilities.
Tell us about your experience as a sound and light engineer and your involvement in managing the school theatre.
At 16, Darren enrolled in a course to become a sound and light engineer. He co-managed the school theatre for three years, gaining practical skills and contributing to the arts.
How did you handle distractions from schoolwork while pursuing creativity and income generation?
Darren’s mind was filled with creativity, innovation, and a drive to create income. Despite obstacles, he persevered and used failure as a stepping stone to success.
What led you to officially start your marketing career as an assistant to the NGO’s marketing manager?
Darren volunteered for the NGO throughout high school. His involvement led to opportunities, including managing projects like the traffic safety program in association with BP and the Traffic Department.
How did your experiences with the NGO shape your understanding of community impact and entrepreneurship?
Working with the NGO exposed Darren to community needs and social impact. It reinforced his belief that entrepreneurship could drive positive change.
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those facing uncertainty or obstacles?
