Fans of the popular singer, songwriter, photographer, and music video producer, Gerduan Kemp, have plenty to smile about.
After a three-year hiatus, this talented musician is finally back behind the microphone with an impressive single that also brings a brand-new idiom to life.
KOFFIE IN DIE KROEG is an Afrikaans pop-rock track that explores the idea of the right thing happening at the wrong time and place.
“One evening, I was out with friends, listening to the conversations around me. After a long day, I wasn’t really in the mood to be there at that specific place and time,” he explains about the inspiration behind the song. “Suddenly, I became aware that I was the only person there with a cup of coffee instead of a glass or bottle in front of me. It made me think about how we often do the right things at the wrong time and place, and that’s how the title and idiom came about: Koffie in die kroeg: The right thing at the wrong place and time.”
Although the verses of the song were written a while ago, he struggled to find the perfect words for the chorus. He enlisted the help of his friend, Emil Paul, to finalize and complete it. Hugo Ludik of Muse Studios produced the track.
This single means a lot to Kemp, as it is his first release in three years. “Releasing a song after so long, especially one that is so honest and raw, is a very exciting but also daunting feeling,” he says. “This song represents a new era in my music career, and I hope it resonates with listeners.”
Naturally, such an exceptional song also deserves to be immortalized in a music video, and they managed to masterfully capture its theme and message.
The video, filmed at The Social Grill in Pretoria, was produced by Gerduan himself, with Abel Knobel behind the camera. It is set in a bar where the singer is hanging out with friends and telling the story of what he sees happening around him. “I wanted to capture the atmosphere and the idea, the feeling of the song in the video. There are also scenes with me performing with a band,” the artist reveals.

KOFFIE IN DIE KROEG is his fifth release, and his previous work has achieved great success, with his debut album streamed over 2 million times on digital platforms. His last single, Al Die Woorde, which he recorded with Tasha (Die Kontrak 1), also received wide recognition and has been streamed over 300 000 times.
Gerduan, who grew up in Bloemfontein and currently resides in Pretoria, has been passionate about music since his school days. He has shared the stage with some of the country’s biggest artists and performed at various Afrikaans music festivals. He is especially known for hits like Sesde Sintuig, Langpad na Môre and Jou Tipe Jaloers.
In addition to music, he is also an outstanding photographer and music video producer with his own business, Gerduan Kemp Photo & Film, which has handled music video projects for several well-known artists, including Elandré and Kurt Darren.
This versatile creative is excited about the next chapter in his music career, and with KOFFIE IN DIE KROEG, he is definitely on the right track.
