Craig Lucas embraces his messy love life with ‘Falling in Love’, a song for the “red flag collectors”

Craig Lucas, the multi-talented singer-songwriter, is back with his latest single, ‘Falling in Love,’ a track that dives headfirst into the chaos of unrequited affection and the hilarity that ensues. This new release marks another milestone in Craig’s impressive career, blending personal experiences with an infectious indie vibe.

Craig explains the inspiration behind ‘Falling in Love,’ saying, “This song is my anthem to the chaos of chasing boys who are unavailable. I joke about needing heartbreak for inspiration, but this track proves it! It’s about a particular boy I fell for after just one night together—a reminder of how embarrassingly fast I catch feelings, especially for those who aren’t available in that way. There’s something thrilling about falling for someone who’s always just a bit out of reach. It’s chaotic, it’s painful, and if you step back, it’s kind of hilarious. This track is me owning up to my messy love life. What’s a little heartbreak anyway?”

‘Falling in Love’ was co-written with Jethro Tait, one of SA’s top singer-songwriter’s and Craig’s most frequent writing partner, who he has been working with since the beginning of his career. “We’re both a bit antisocial and very introverted, and we listen to the same type of music,” explains Craig. “Both Jethro and I won reality singing competitions, which adds another layer to our connection. Our similar personalities made our first few writing sessions a little awkward. I was so stressed, thinking he hated me and thought I sucked. But after a couple of sessions, we realized how alike we were, and the music just started flowing.”

Jethro completely gets Craig as a writer. “It’s like those couples who finish each other’s sentences—he’s that to me as a writing partner. He’s also the sweetest guy, an amazing musician, and one of the best artists in the country. He brings a sense of calm to my chaos. I’m really grateful to have met him and to work together,” explains Craig.

Some of Craig’s favorites songs that he has written with Jethro are ‘Smother,’ which he says they must have written in less than an hour, ‘Weirdo,’ which perfectly explains their personalities and why they make a great team, and now the new track ‘Falling in Love,’ which is probably the happiest-sounding song they’ve written together. “’Falling in Love’ is the first song we’ve written together since ‘Weirdo’ in 2021. So much has changed since then,” recalls Craig. “We’ve both become independent artists and have shared our career struggles with each other. It’s nice that we’re both in a better place now. I’ve grown a lot more confident in my abilities and with who I am as an artist, and writing this time around was a lot of fun. I hope he never gets sick of me, and we get to write lots more songs together.”

‘Falling in Love’ was produced by Dolf Willemse in his Cape Town studio. “Meeting a new engineer can be stressful—it’s a vulnerable space where your vocals are completely exposed, and you’re sharing your art for the first time. But Dolf was easy-going, kind, and patient, even when I kept changing my mind about the song’s direction. He helped push the song away from my usual style, giving it a cooler, indie vibe with a more organic sound. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I’m excited to work with Dolf on another track soon,” says Craig.

Craig is currently working on his most personal album yet. Fans can expect a pop-rock rollercoaster with electric guitars, thumping drums, and Craig’s powerhouse vocals wrapped in catchy melodies. It tackles tough topics such as depression and substance abuse, and even tougher topics such as his unwavering tendency to repeatedly fall for losers who don’t deserve him! It’s basically therapy you can dance to.

Independent and unstoppable, Craig’s newfound love for music shines through. He’s here to have fun, make great music, make lots of money, spend all that money, and maybe, just maybe, find a sugar daddy to keep the party going. After all, in the wise words of Cyndi Lauper, “gays just wanna have fun!”
