The school holidays are upon us, and many people are flocking to the beach to catch the last bit of sunshine before winter sets in.
With his first solo single, marking his return to the music industry after ten years, the popular musician Rowan Zerf has managed to produce the perfect hit that will reign supreme on every party playlist this holiday season.
According to him, the song is about a girl on the beach who gives him the cold shoulder because she’s only there to lay on the beach, hence the fitting title of the track – NET HIER OM TE TAN.
This song, which he co-wrote with his brother Chad and produced with Robin Kielly, is an attempt to humorously comment on people’s obsession with social media.
“People are absolutely obsessed with themselves and their image on social media. Likes and followers have become the new currency, and this song is a reminder that we have to put our phones down sometimes to see what we might be missing out on in real life,” he explains. “It’s not a very deep song, it’s just something simple and fun. The music is enjoyable, the melody is easy to sing along to, and the music video makes it even more appealing.”
The video is set on a beautiful beach in the Cape and was filmed by Quintessential Photo & Video Worx.
Just like the song, the video epitomizes a cheerful and laidback atmosphere with people dancing on the beach and singing along with the singer, almost like a South African version of the Barbie movie.
Despite having only a few hours to shoot due to bad weather, the end result is perfect and manages to draw viewers in and feel part of the action.

Zerf has wanted to be a musician for as long as he can remember and already began working as a sound engineer on projects at the State Theatre in Pretoria when he was just 16.
This seasoned guitarist and singer made his official debut in the music industry in 2011 as part of the former popular boy band NRG, but about ten years ago, he traded his music dream for love.
However, since August 2023, the 40-year-old Pretorian is back on stage full-time and already had more than a million views on TikTok with a song he wrote on the day of the Rugby World Cup final.
When he is not singing, he enjoys spending time the bush and plans on touring the country extensively with his band.
NET HIER OM TE TAN is just the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this versatile artist’s career, and one cannot help but to look forward to what he has in store for us next.
The song is distributed by Platinum Music and is now available on all digital streaming platforms.
