After impressing fans in 2022 as part of the theatre production, Die Gelofte: A Musiekblyspel, and with his debut single, Koue Pizza, Ilán van Staden is keeping up the good work in 2023 with a brand-new single.
ONTLAAI (unwind), written by Johan Vorster and David de Villiers, has just been released and is already spreading like wildfire.
“It is a positive feel-good track, about how everyone needs to unwind sometimes,” he explains. “Sometimes you are under so much pressure that it becomes too much. This is when you need to stop, catch your breath and do what you love – like hunting, fishing and relaxing around the campfire. It is every man’s duty to guide his family, and I hope that this song will inspire everyone who hears it.”
According to Ilán, the lyrics of the song immediately resonated with him, and he believes that it will also appeal to other men.
“ONTLAAI inspires unity and addresses issues that men often wonder, pray and talk about,” he adds.
In addition to Koue Pizza, the handsome singer – who recently landed a record deal with Inhoud Huis Musiek – also released a duet with Bernice West, called Soen My Op My Mond. It was specifically written for Die Gelofte and can still be heard on the radio.
Music is all the 26-year-old singer-songwriter has wanted to make for as long as he can remember. He took guitar and drum lessons as a child, and as a teenager he started writing music and performing with his high school band. He was also the drummer and co-composer for various Sêr groups at university – he completed his master’s degree in Environmental and Biological Sciences at North-West University in 2019 – while playing with bands across Potchefstroom every chance he got.
Since then, he has been honing his skills as a musician and has tried to make the most of every chance – he reached the semi-finals of The Voice SA Season 3.
Currently he is busy with physical training for his lead role in the upcoming musical, Die Kaplyn, about the border war.
In addition to these preparations, he is also in the process of finalising his debut album and busy managing his own music school, Ilán’s Music Academy, which he started five years ago. Furthermore, he is also performing as much as possible and plans on touring the country during the course of the year.
ONTLAAI, which is also the titular track of his upcoming album, is one of those songs that inspires you to listen carefully. It has a powerful message and is just one of many songs that this gifted musician wants to make a difference with. The video for this popular track will be available soon.
“I have come to realize the importance of prayers in each phase of our lives. God determines the outcome of our lives, even if we have other plans. Therefore, we should allow him to guide us on this journey,” he concludes.
