Joburg Ballet’s CEO Esther Nasser is thrilled to announce that Akram Khan, one of the most iconic dance personalities on the global stage, will conduct a 5-day intensive Workshop Week with Joburg Ballet from 7 to 11 February 2023.
The multi award-winning and critically acclaimed choreographer and dancer will work ‘behind closed doors’ with Joburg Ballet’s dancers from Tuesday 7 to Friday 10 February. The last day, Saturday 11 February will be open to observers – this Open Day will comprise a 75-minute classical ballet class given by Mavin Khoo, Creative Associate of the Akram Khan Company, followed by a 2-hour workshop session with Akram Khan; and will run from 10h00 to 13h30.

Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today and over the last 20 years has contributed significantly to the arts with a reputation built on the success of imaginative, accessible and relevant productions. As an instinctive and natural collaborator, his choreography is the embodiment of shared exploration across multiple disciplines and cultures. Collaborators include dancers, dance companies, actors, choreographers, singers, musicians, visual artists, writers and composers. His work is profoundly moving with intelligently crafted storytelling which is effortlessly intimate and epic. As a choreographer, he has developed a close collaboration with English National Ballet and in recent years has moved into television documentaries. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including an MBE for services to dance.
